Thinking tt you might have seen this somewhere before...?
Orchard, Singapore
Nishi- Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.
Yes, they are the famous Robert Indiana's Love Sculptures.
If you do a quick wiki search on Robert Indiana , you will be able to find his extensive works since the early '50s. And of course, the most popular being the Love logo.
First produced in 1964 by the American artist, Robert Indiana as an image for a Christmas card and thereafter in 1973 as a series of USPS love stamps. Indiana's Love logo had soon became very popular and sculptures of this logo can be found in various locations in America and other well known cities of the world such as Bangkok, Tokyo, Spain, Vancouver, Shanghai etc.
Behind every artist's creation, be it an image, a logo, or sculpture, I'm sure there is an embedded message in them which the artist wish to convey. Same goes for this. During the times of war back then, the message behind this simple yet bold logo, was none other than Peace.
Today, we are blessed with a peaceful nation (though some other nations aren't for the same), and being well protected under our roofs, perhaps we have taken the importance of Peace for granted. We might have forgotten how difficult it was for this moment to come by. It is sad to know that many people like us, had forgotten the actual meaning of this sculpture, and it has become merely a piece of art somewhere in the corner of the city. Sad but true, and i'm guilty too.
So.... The next time when we pass by this sculpture, other than taking a few snaps of photos, perhaps we should stop by for a minute to truly appreciate Indiana's art and its true meaning.
Will you? :)
